Gunnar Montana is a self-taught visual artist creating bold, colorful work that is playful and unapologetically queer. Working with acrylic and spray paint, his style blends pop art, comic books, graffiti, and street art through saturated color, heavy black linework, paint splatter, and layered texture.
VISUAL ART
-
Often centered around queer icons, performers, and larger-than-life personalities, Gunnar’s paintings celebrate individuality, humor, beauty, and rebellion. Much of his work is commissioned, and he especially enjoys collaborating with clients to create something he is excited to paint and that they will love living with and seeing in their home every day.
In 2019, Gunnar produced NEON DAYDREAM, a solo art show featuring more than 30 original paintings. The experience brought together an art gallery, pop-up performances, and cocktail parties, culminating in a sold-out collection by the end of the weekend.
Painting provides a balance to the physical demands of Gunnar’s immersive theater work. After spending part of the year creating worlds, building productions, and performing onstage, he shifts into visual art as a way to rest his body, decompress, and continue creating at a different pace.
Gunnar is always challenging himself to expand what his visual art can be. His work has taken the form of large-scale murals, clothing, sewn canvas pillows, traditional stretched canvases, laser-cut wood, and most recently, his Go-Go Boy series. By bringing together skills from painting, fabrication, theater, and design, his visual art continues to transform and evolve alongside the rest of his creative practice.
