Gunnar Montana creates large-scale installations, sculptures, scenic environments, and interactive experiences for brands, events, and cultural institutions. Everything is fabricated in his South Philadelphia warehouse shop, where creative ideas are designed, built, and brought to life by hand.
Fabrications
-
Gunnar learned to fabricate through his work in theater, designing and building sets, props, and immersive environments for his productions. Over the years, fabrication became an important part of his artistic practice, allowing him to bring his ideas to life beyond the stage.
His fabrication practice is rooted in woodworking, a skill he developed through years of building sets and large-scale environments for his productions. He also works extensively with foam construction and carving, creating sculptural elements, oversized objects, and stage props that can transform a space without the weight or limitations of traditional materials.
Painting is another major part of his process. Gunnar uses hand painting, stenciling, scenic treatments, and layered finishes to turn constructed forms into convincing objects and environments. His work often incorporates unconventional materials and unexpected combinations of techniques, allowing the method of fabrication to change completely from one project to the next.
That versatility has carried his work beyond the stage and into large-scale installations and brand activations for clients including Mastercard, Comcast, Independence Blue Cross, and Citizens Bank, produced in collaboration with Our People Entertainment. He has also created work for the Philadelphia Flower Show, including two installations that received Best in Show.
Whether building an immersive set, carving an oversized prop, constructing an installation, or experimenting with a material he has never used before, Gunnar approaches fabrication as an extension of his artistic practice: figuring out how to make an idea exist in the real world.
